Location

Iria is a village of Argolida built on the shores of the Argolic Gulf near Nafplion. In ancient times Iria was called ``Wild Port`` (port of the fields) and held a very important place in the road transport of the region since it connected the shores of the Argolic Gulf with Epidaurus. The fertile plain of Iria ends at cape Cavo Iris and is crossed by the river Sellas, which was the natural border between the state of Epidaurus and Hermione, a fact that caused very often conflicts between them. A stoned built wall, which leads to the ruins of a small tower, is preserved until today. The Signal Tower, which served to alert other towers in the area with smoke signals for the raids of enemies against Mycenae, is also preserved. An ancient shipwreck dating back to 1200 BC was discovered in 1962. In the area, the visitor will also find the Church of St. Nicholas and the Monastery of Avgou which is built very close to Mount Avgo.
